3D printed paper porcelain lamps COCOON, The research of 3D printing technology and printable organic materials has resulted in the 3D printed porcelain luminaire "Cocoon".
These lights are one of the world's first products printed from a mixture of English porcelain and cellulose in particular scale and is a development of 3D printing technology in symbiosis of composite. In order to refine the materials, the cellulose - which is one of the largest industrial production wastes in Estonia, has been repurposed.
The luminaire is composed of three cocoon-like domes, with a subtle and organic texture derived from the cellulose fiber that makes the repetitive computer file vivid and unique. The research involved combining traditional materials with technology, where recycled paper fiber and precious porcelain are mixed to create a compound that gives 3D printing unforeseen benefits and a new quality. The recycled paper pulp, which spirals into a nozzle when printed, adds strength to the raw porcelain and makes the production process significantly more economical and efficient - in terms of material, energy and time. Following the principles of recycling, the lighting solution uses LED strips and wiring from discarded equipment. Power consumption 15 watts, total weight 4 kg.
The concept of the cocoon carries the idea of unity - all of Creation embraces a distinct uniqueness, and yet within this universe everything is somehow interconnected and in some way familiar.
